The first librarians at Clear Creek included:
Rev. J. C. Dance, librarian and professor of Systematic Theology, Church History and third year English. Mrs. John Carter became the librarian in the fall of 1947. By 1950, Mrs. Gladys Kelly, wife of found L. C. Kelly, assumed responsibility of the library which was moved to the middle classrooms in Kelly Hall. In 1943, the library holdings had reached 600 volumes mainly through generous donations.
The first books were cataloged in 1947. It was noted that a building would soon be needed to hold these "precious volumes." At this time, Kelly Hall was classroom, dormitory, chapel, cafeteria, and library at the mountain preachers school. Borrowing privileges were extended to local mountain preachers in 1954 to help with access to biblical material. In 1955, a memorial section of the library was started to honor J. C. Dance who had passed in November 1954. Friends donated books about one of his passions, church work in rural areas. |
donationsDuring the 1940's and 50's requests were often listed in the school's newsletter, The Mountain Voice, for book donations.
By 1965, donations accounted for two-thirds of the libraries holdings. |
RemodelingSeptember of 1954 announced that the library space in Kelly Hall had been remodeled. The library, now the pride and joy of campus, had a new checkout desk, tables and chairs in the reading room, and reserve shelf for professors.
